SUMMARY:Joshua Johnson: Portraitist of Federal Era Maryland
DESCRIPTION:Explore the work of Joshua Johnson (ca. 1763‒1824) with Dr. Fulco as he discusses one of the nation’s first professional African American portraitists in the context of the Federal period. Johnson achieved a remarkable degree of success in his lifetime by painting affluent patrons in his native Baltimore. His subjects consisted of politicians\, lawyers\, doctors\, clergymen\, merchants\, and sea captains. Given the artist’s background and the era in which he lived\, Johnson was impelled to overcome many racial and social hurdles in pursuing his profession\, and the fact that we continue to study his work today is a testament to his perseverance. \nDaniel Fulco serves as Agnita M. Stine Schreiber Curator at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. He is the curator of the exhibition Joshua Johnson: Portraitist of Early American Baltimore and edited its accompanying catalogue\, both of which were supported by grants from the NEA\, ADAA Foundation\, and other donors. Dr. Fulco received his doctoral degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, where he was Distinguished Fellow from 2007‒2010. He is a scholar of European and American art from the 17th to the 19th centuries and has authored a book\, numerous edited volume chapters\, and articles. \n

SUMMARY:Storms\, Tempests and ‘Visions of Romance’ - August virtual meeting
DESCRIPTION:Storms\, Tempests and ‘Visions of Romance’: Jane Austen and the Weather \nKatie Halsey\, University of Stirling\, will discuss some of the many ways in which Jane Austen uses the weather in her novels: to structure plot\, to set the mood\, and finally to engage with the philosophical ideas of her time. Focusing mainly on Northanger Abbey\, she will explore Austen’s use of two storms to structure that novel – and particularly the way Austen uses them to distinguish her heroine’s journey from superstition to rationality. \nRegister Here \n

Our talk will look at Austen adaptations from the past few years that effectively reflect the diverse world of her current readers and address issues relevant to the present day. \nBio’s of our Speakers\nJuliette Wells is Professor of Literary Studies in the Department of Visual\, Literary\, and Material Culture at Goucher College. The author of three histories of Austen’s readers\, all published by Bloomsbury Academic\, and the editor of two Penguin Classics editions of Austen\, she will guest co-curate a major\, international Austen exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York in 2025. Forthcoming in 2023 is A New Jane Austen: How Americans Brought Us the World’s Greatest Novelist\, which centers on visionary writers and collectors who\, from the 1880s to the 1980s\, advocated for Austen’s literary significance\, broadened her readership\, and preserved artifacts vital to her legacy. Reading Austen in America (2017) offers a vivid account of how an appreciative audience for Austen’s novels originated and developed in America\, and how American readers contributed to the rise of Austen’s international fame. Everybody’s Jane: Austen in the Popular Imagination (2011) explores the importance of Austen to readers and fans today. All these books highlight Goucher’s exceptional Jane Austen collection and its creator\, alumna Alberta H. Burke. For Penguin Classics\, Dr. Wells created reader-friendly 200th-anniversary editions of Austen’s novels Persuasion (2017) and Emma (2015). Her more than thirty-five articles and book chapters include examinations of Austen’s novels and adaptations\, as well as essays on Austen pedagogy. An acclaimed speaker to popular and scholarly audiences\, she was a guest on Jane Austen & Co.’s spring 2021 “Race and the Regency” series and regularly gives lectures to national and regional meetings of JASNA. \nGrace Fischbach graduated from Goucher in May 2022 with a major in Professional & Creative Writing and minors in Literature and Biological Sciences. A 2022 recipient of Goucher’s Kratz Summer Writing Fellowship\, she traveled to her family’s ancestral village in Sweden to explore her heritage and family through a series of chronological poems. Since May 2022\, she has been working part time in Goucher’s Special Collections & Archives. \nSayre Greenfield is from Eugene\, Oregon. SUMMARY:Jane Austen & Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Jane Austen’s love of gardening is apparent in several of her novels. The English love their gardens and\, luckily\, exported that love to America. We will discuss Austen’s garden\, the plants that she grew and those she wrote about\, as well as some of her influences. How can we re-create the Austen gardens grown from 1800 to 1820? Where are there gardens here in Maryland and the mid-Atlantic area that will inspire us to grow some of Austen’s favorite plants? And\, where can we find the plants\, start the seeds and re-create some of the magic in our home gardens? \nCarrie Engel\, Greenhouse Manager\nCarrie began working at Valley View Farms in 1972\, and is well known in our area. Carrie appears weekly with meteorologists Tony Pann and Ava Marie on the WBAL TV’s Sunday Gardener. She enjoys writing\, speaking about gardening\, photography\, the Orioles\, and spending time with her extended family. Carrie also enjoys traveling\, especially road trips\, where she looks for what is new in plants and gardening everywhere she goes. \nRegister Here \n

SUMMARY:Jane Austen and the Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Deborah C. Payne\, American University\nAs 15 years of scholarship has chronicled\, Jane Austen very much liked the theatre. Letters to her sister\, Cassandra\, reveal trips to London playhouses and occasional outings in Bath. Austen’s enjoyment\, however\, was perhaps more that of an eager fan hoping to glimpse her favorite star than a novelist looking to imbibe literary inspiration. She was keen to see Kean (Edmund\, that is) but was not especially interested in his role as Shylock or in The Merchant of Venice. In that regard\, Austen was a product of her time. Regency Theatre was very much an “actor’s theatre\,” and plays were tailored for the stars everyone hankered to see. This talk thus pushes (gently) against the notion that highbrow dramatic literature influenced Austen’s writing; rather\, it reconstructs the many delights of the Regency stage to suggest that she was more captivated by celebrity and spectacle than Shakespeare. \nDeborah C. Payne is a professor in the Department of Literature at American University in Washington\, D.C.\, who specializes in the history of performance and the theatre. In addition to providing dramaturgical expertise to theatre companies in Washington\, Professor Payne has published extensively on topics ranging from Restoration actresses\, Shakespeare authorship\, Samuel Pepys\, and Jane Austen’s theatrical spectatorship. Among her publications are The Cambridge Companion to English Restoration Theatre (Cambridge University Press); Four Libertine Plays from the Restoration (Oxford University Press); and Revisiting Shakespeare’s Lost Play: Cardenio/Double Falsehood in the Eighteenth Century (Palgrave Macmillan). Professor Payne has forthcoming two books: The Business of Restoration Theatre\, 1660 – 1700 (Cambridge University Press\, 2023) and The Shakespeare Theatre Company\, 1986 – 2021 (Bloomsbury\, 2024)\, which she is co-authoring with Drew Lichtenburg\, Literary Manager for the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington\, D.C. Her next project will attempt to reconstruct English acting styles across the seventeenth century\, looking especially at the demise of the old “Blackfriars” style by the 1690s. \nRegister Here \n

SUMMARY:Confidence Men: Transmitted Dialogues between Men - Virtual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Jane Austen rarely represented dialogues between men when no woman is present\, opting instead to have male characters report such interaction. This presentation considers how the novels construct grounds for belief in such transmissions of male conversation\, situating credibility in alignment with character and context. After discussing recounted dialogue in Emma\, Northanger Abbey and Pride and Prejudice\, this talk turns to the one sustained unmediated exchange between men — a pair of letters in Lady Susan — to come to speculative conclusions about Austen’s choice not to represent private masculine dialogues. \nPresented by Tara Ghoshal Wallace\, Emerita Professor of English at George Washington University \nRegister for the Zoom link:\n

SUMMARY:A Day in the Country - 2025 AGM Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:JASNA is grateful to our host\, Sandy Lerner. Sandy is the founder of Chawton House Library and Center for Early English Women’s Writing. Under the pen name Ava Farmer\, she is the author of Second Impressions. \nSince 1996\, Sandy has owned Ayrshire Farm. The first farm in Virginia to be Certified Humane®\, Certified USDA Organic\, and Certified Predator Friendly\, Ayrshire Farm is dedicated to raising rare heritage-breed animals on healthy\, carbon-sequestering no-till pastures using humane\, holistic\, and regenerative practices. The manor house\, built in 1911\, is constructed of fieldstone quarried on the property. The interior decoration reflects Sandy’s interest in Austen’s era\, farming\, literature\, and art. \nLocke’s Mill has roots going back to 1777\, with ownership ties to George Washington’s family. The current building\, from 1876\, was partially restored when purchased by Sandy in 2016. A USDA Certified Organic milling system continues the tradition of local milling\, providing custom grinding services for local distillers\, bakers\, restaurants\, and other customers. \nAt the Mill\, guests will be able to see traditional grinding as it would have been done in Jane Austen’s day. Plan to spend about 15-30 minutes there. Please note that due to the historic nature of the building\, the Mill is only accessible by stairs. Driving to the Farm takes about 30 minutes. \nAt the Farm\, the principal rooms on the main floor will be on view\, along with the marvelous carriage collection and horses at the adjacent Carriage House. Carriage rides are limited by space and will be offered weather permitting. The day includes a boxed picnic lunch (meat or vegetarian option) and cream tea. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs to enjoy your lunch. Tea will be served on the terrace\, with beautiful views of the Virginia countryside. \nSpace is Limited\nRSVP by August 29th\nhttps://forms.gle/6xrncm3BdaxXmrc49 \njasna2025agm@gmail.com
