Storms, Tempests and ‘Visions of Romance’: Jane Austen and the Weather

Katie Halsey, University of Stirling, will discuss some of the many ways in which Jane Austen uses the weather in her novels: to structure plot, to set the mood, and finally to engage with the philosophical ideas of her time. Focusing mainly on Northanger Abbey, she will explore Austen’s use of two storms to structure that novel – and particularly the way Austen uses them to distinguish her heroine’s journey from superstition to rationality.
